Lithines, a small village set off the road to Sitia, is well known for her churches. Of particular interest is the church of the Virgin of Lithines, which is partially built into the rocks and where some remarkably beautiful icons can be seen.

The church, believed to have been built in the 15th century, has the original glazed plates from which the builders ate embedded into the external south wall.
